Bristol’s first experience in the music business came after he was discharged from the Air Force and teamed with Jackey Beavers to form the duo, “Johnny & Jackey.” In 1959 Bristol recorded two singles for Anna Records, owned by Berry Gordy’s sister, Gwen, and Billy Davis. He served as executive assistant to Joe Frank Harris, the Governor of Georgia, for eight years; executive assistant to Bobby Whitworth, the Commissioner of Georgia's Department of Corrections, for three years; and aide to Tom Murphy, Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, for seven years.


Johnny & Jackey progressed from talent shows to cash money gigs at the El Grotto, backed by the All Stars, and were discovered by Gwen Gordy, who signed them to Anna Records and became their manager.

Worked for Motown from 1959 to 1972 with the top selling acts of the roster like The Supremes, Smokey Robinson etc. He died at the age of 65 in his home in Michigan in 2004.
