I was thinkin' 'bout the last time I saw you Some people love books. The world would believe I really wanted to love this, but I found it hard to connect with , it felt so slow, I couldn’t relate to the characters , just didn’t live up to my expectations. The first few opening chapters were exquisite! We start with Sophie and learn she has had a really difficult childhood and consequently struggles with closeness as an adult. Right from the first chapter I was pulled in tight and the book didn't let go of me until the very last page.
The Songs of Us – which I finished early in January – was incredible. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by British political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who later became his wife. It's a heartwarming read and has you in tears at times and worth far more than five stars. This was a really enjoyable read, and another book that is perfect for reading wrapped up in a blanket with a cat, ignoring the horrible weather we’re having lately. They are aided and abetted by a wonderful cast of characters, particularly Samuel's family, who are hilarious and so vividly drawn - I absolutely loved them and they added a definite fizz to the story.
Before Sophie met Samuel she saw the world in grey. The Songs of Us – which I finished early in January – was incredible. And who would believe? The rest of the story is the sibling love of Sophie with her step-sister Helen and Samuel with his sister Sarah, and the parental love with Sophie and her mum (don’t get me started about the tea party) and with Samuel and his parents (can we just spend a moment to pay tribute to the awesomeness of Mr & Mrs M). I thought the storyline was brilliant too, full of emotion and lots.
